Bank Locker Rule 2025: Transparent Pricing Based on Size & Location Explained

As per RBI, all locker users of banks would have to sign a revised agreement by 31 December 2025. This makes sure that there is certainty on terms, responsibilities and usage. Failure to comply could limit access to the locker and hence make it important to update at your bank as soon as possible.

Enhanced Security Measures

As of June 1, 2025, banks have to introduce the system of biometric access (fingerprints or iris scans) and surveillance cameras with footage stored during 180 days. Risks of unauthorized access are reduced by use of dual-key systems whereby both the bank and customer keys are required.

Transparent Pricing Structure

Banking institutions are now transparent about all the locker charges including rent charge and maintenance charges as well as tax. This is charged on a yearly basis and depends on the size of the locker and the branch where the locker is positioned. Metro areas attract a 20 percent higher annual rent. Such openness assists customers to make proper expenditure plans

Liability for Losses

In case of compromise of a locker by the fault of the bank, fraud or theft, the mass compensation from banks is 100 times an annual rent. To rent out a property the amount asked was 3,000 annual rent where in 3,00,000 could be received, hence being accountable.

Nomination and Access Rules

From April 16, 2025, four members can be nominated to undertake easier access to the locker after the holder of the locker dies. Nominees can be allowed in 15 days after submission of valid documents, making easier to adjust families.

Items Allowed and Prohibited

  • Allowed: Jewellery, property documents, insurance policies, savings bonds.
  • Prohibited: Cash, arms, drugs, explosives, perishable or hazardous items. Storing prohibited items may lead to locker termination or legal action.
